Baton Rouge, La.
Belaire H.S.

Junior running back Mewelde Moore has compiled two of the most impressive seasons in Tulane football history. As a freshman, he rushed for 890 yards, the most yards by a Green Wave back since 1970. Last year, the Baton Rouge native erased nearly all of Tulane‚s single-season rushing records. Just a sophomore, he broke Tulane‚s 53-year old record for single-season rushing (1,421) and shattered the school and Conference USA single-season all-purpose yardage marks (2,259), finishing third in the nation in that category. He also became the first player in NCAA I-A history to rush for over 1,250 yards and catch more than 60 passes in the same season.

Question: Most Memorable Experience with Tulane Athletics?

Mewelde: My most memorable experience was playing LSU at Tiger Stadium [in 2001]. Being in the home atmosphere with all of those ragin‚ Cajuns and everybody screaming and the ground shaking. It was just great right there before we said, "Hike." I think the first handoff in Tiger Stadium was my most memorable moment.

Question: How has being a Tulane student-athlete helped or changed you?

Mewelde: It has helped me and changed me as well. It has made me much more responsible and it has made me more focused and job- and task-oriented. It has taught me how to use my time wisely each day. There is so little time in the day to do what you need to do. It has shown me that you really need to do what you need to do, take care of your business first. Whatever time you have left after that, you can keep for yourself.

Question: Major?

Mewelde: I am a double major in accounting and finance. At first I wanted to be pre-med but I do not have time for that right now, so I have put premed on the side. Maybe in the future, I could go back to school to try to pursue that as well.

Question: Favorite On-Campus Activities?

Mewelde: I enjoy when [Tulane] has carnivals in the yard in front of the University Center. I also enjoy playing video games with other athletes and other friends who are just passing by the dorm room.

Question: If you could play another sport at Tulane, what would it be?

Mewelde: I would like to play for Tulane baseball and coach Rick Jones.

Question: Do you miss not being able to play college baseball (because of your professional career)?

Mewelde: Not necessarily, I would have liked to have had the chance, but I knew what opportunity I was getting [from the San Diego Padres]. Sometimes you can not let a good opportunity pass you by.

Question: Favorite Music?

Mewelde: I listen to all kinds of music. I listen to pop, I listen to rock; I do not like heavy metal, but I like rap, I like R&B. I listen to gospel and I listen to classical and symphonies, pretty much anything. I am very music oriented. I played in the school band from the fourth grade to the eighth grade, but I had to set my trumpet down to pursue sports, because I did not want to march in the band and play on the field (laughing). I like all music, I just like to listen to good, quality music?

Question: Last Concert?

Mewelde: Brian McKnight at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans.

Question: I Chose Tulane Because...

Mewelde: The coaches shot me straight. But most importantly, my mother wanted me to come here. She knew about the strong academics and she always wanted one of her kids to come to Tulane, so I always thought if I could get a chance to make that possible for my mother, then I would. I wanted an opportunity to play immediately and at Tulane, that was a possibility.

Question: Personal Philosophy?

Mewelde: I live my life by putting God first and trusting Him and believing that whatever He has for me, it‚s all good.

Question: People who influenced athletic career?

Mewelde: My athletic career has basically been influenced by my brother, Jerry B. Moore. I push myself a lot as well and my friends push me a little bit and they support me. I have a lot of support. In the beginning, it was my brother and my father who supported me the most. My brother put in me the mindset of, "you have to go out and give it your best; you don't want any regrets." My dad was also saying, "no regrets, give it your all, when I was out there, I gave it my all." I realized at that time that I was representing my family, I was representing myself, and most of all, I was representing my maker, so I want to give everything I have.

Question: Best Advice you ever received?

Mewelde: "No Regrets." My father told me to have no regrets and give it your all and when all is said and done, you can look back and smile.

Question: What advice would you give to an incoming freshman?

Mewelde: I would tell them to go out there and have fun and enjoy it and also learn. It can be an enjoyable, learning experience. Don't pressure yourself. Just enjoy, relax and have fun and play how you know how to play.

Question: A Class you would recommend?

Mewelde: I would recommend my English 101 class [with professor Lois Conrad]. She was a great teacher. I would also recommend micro- and macro-economics. They are very challenging classes and Ms. Weiss [professor Toni Weiss] does a great job.

Question: Favorite movie?

Mewelde: I am a movie-goer, I go to watch movies all the time with my girlfriend Tymeka. That is like "our" hobby. That is the thing that we do. The most recent movie I have seen is "Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat."It is pretty funny, but it has some realistic stuff and he talks about what he has gone through. That is the most recent, but there are so many I like, it is hard to pick one.

Question: Favorite sports movie?

Mewelde: "Remember the Titans." It was a movie of complete adversity. Not because of the racial barriers; it was just the whole point that there was a barrier for someone trying to accomplish a goal and he was against all odds. He had people to help him and he was a good man. From the coach's aspect, he put his team through it and they overcame and became victorious.

Question: Actor you would most like to see in a movie?

Mewelde: My two favorite actors are Omar Epps and Wesley Snipes. If I could see those guys together in a movie or back-to-back, I would love to. I enjoy their diversity and they are so versatile, I enjoy watching them perform.

Question: Favorite Food?

Mewelde: Pot roast and rice and gravy with cornbread. Made by my mom is what I grew up with and that's what I know, but if someone can make some good pot roast and rice and gravy, hey, I'm there. And Jiffy cornbread. It's got to be Jiffy!

Question: Dream Vacation Destination?

Mewelde: I would like to go to a beach, somewhere on an island.

Question: If you could have dinner with any three people?

Mewelde: My granny, my grandmother, Juanita Morris. I would like to have dinner with Wesley [Snipes] or Omar [Epps] and Vivica Fox.

Question: People I would like to thank...

Mewelde: Right now I would like to thank everyone who was there for me. All of my coaches [high school]: Coach Hall, Coach Carroll, Coach Amity, Coach Mook, Coach Bodner. I would like to thank my brother, my mother; I would like to thank God most of all, my father, my girlfriend who gives me support now. She does not bother me like everybody else would. She understands the athletic turmoil that you go through. I would also like to thank my family, my aunties, my uncles, my cousins, and my friends. I really appreciate all of them, as well as my fans for their support.
